Mr. Shanker Das Bairagi

Mr. Shanker Das Bairagi, National Security Advisor of Nepal

Mr. Shanker Das Bairagi is a seasoned diplomat who served as the Foreign Secretary of Nepal from October 2015 to October 2020. He joined the Nepali Foreign Service in December 1987 and held various positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nepali missions abroad. Prior to his ambassadorial appointment, he served as Deputy Permanent Representative/Minister Plenipotentiary of Nepal to the United Nations in New York from November 2009 to February 2012.

During his tenure as Ambassador/Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office, World Trade Organization, and other international organizations in Geneva, Mr. Bairagi led the Nepali delegations to several international conferences and meetings. He also served as the Coordinator of the Consultative Group of the Least Developed Countries in WTO and successfully steered the group during the crucial negotiations on the outcome of WTO’s Ninth Ministerial Conference. Mr. Bairagi has represented Nepal in numerous high-level meetings, including summit meetings of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

Mr. Bairagi has a strong academic background, holding a master’s degree in political science from Tribhuvan University and a master’s degree in European Integration and Development from the Free University of Brussels. He is a graduate of Law from Nepal Law Campus and was born on January 26, 1966, in Parbat, Nepal.
